R&B sensation Usher may be on the verge of bringing back the woman who helped him to propel to superstar status, his mother.
=According to New York’s Daily News, talks are circulating that the superstar may be replacing his current manager, Benny Medina, with his mom, Jonetta Patton. Despite his latest effort Here I Stand selling debuting at the number 1 slot on the charts and selling 433,000 in its first week earlier this year, sources say he was still upset at the totals.
"Usher was livid,” an insider told Daily News. “He threatened to fire everyone.”
Patton was on board with her son when his 2004 album, Confessions sold 1.1 million copies in its opening week.
Replacing Patton just before Mother’s Day 2007 with Medina, expectations grew as his track record includes developing the careers of both Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez. Medina reportedly told Usher not to worry about his first week sales due to the music industry’s recent slump, however Lil’ Wayne’s Tha Carter III selling over a million in it’s debut week could have been the last straw.
“People have been telling Usher to listen to his mother,” another source told Daily News. “Nobody knows how to sell him better than she does. Usher can be stubborn. But he may be ready.”
As of now, Medina remains as his manager while Patton is reportedly in the mix of running her own record label and managing other artists like the singer’s younger brother, Jlack.
